{"id":788,"date":"2012-02-25T11:31:30","date_gmt":"2012-02-25T10:31:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.backgroundexposure.com\/blog\/?p=788"},"modified":"2025-03-08T21:47:40","modified_gmt":"2025-03-08T20:47:40","slug":"d800-or-d800e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backgroundexposure.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/d800-or-d800e\/","title":{"rendered":"D800 or D800E"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s been a lot said about the new Nikon D800 and it&#8217;s twin, the D800E.\u00a0 There&#8217;s nothing but a single letter on the outside to tell them apart and not much on the inside, either, with only the anti-aliasing filter cancelled out.<\/p>\n<p>What does an anti-aliasing filter do?\u00a0 It (nearly) eliminates the effect of &#8220;moire&#8221; patterns caused by fine, repeating detail.\u00a0 See the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moir%C3%A9_pattern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia article<\/a> for more information.\u00a0 The cost of such a filter is that the resolution is decreased somewhat because the light is &#8220;blurred&#8221; (high-frequency component is removed) so that it hits more than a single pixel.<\/p>\n<p>What this means is that the D800E <em>without<\/em> the AA filter will be able to produce an image with more detail than it&#8217;s brother.\u00a0 However, any fine, repeating patterns will likely cause <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=moire+photography&amp;tbm=isch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weird color artifacts<\/a>.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re a nature photographer, such patterns are not common but if you&#8217;re going to be photographing anything man-made (including clothes), the lack of an AA filter is going to create problems, problems that are very difficult to remove in post-processing.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve ordered a D800 (no-E) for myself because experience has taught me that too much stress on the best possible performance usually comes back to bite you in many other ways.\u00a0 <strong>Better to have something that works really well in all situations than something that works perfectly in only a few.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s been a lot said about the new Nikon D800 and it&#8217;s twin, the D800E.
